Senegal Will Be The First African Country Ever To Host An Olympic Event

As ridiculous as it sounds, no African country has ever hosted an Olympic event. Well, thankfully, that is about to change, as Senegal has been selected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2022 Youth Olympic Games!

Following the IOC’s mandate that the 2022 edition of the games be hosted in Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, Tunisia and Senegal all tabled their proposals, and we guess Senegal simply had the most exciting prospects.

At first, we thought that Nigeria would easily push other contenders off, given that the country proposed putting forth a bid for the 2018 edition but ultimately failed to do so. However, the Executive Board of the IOC believes “Senegal offers a strong project and the greatest opportunities at this moment in time”.

Senegal plans to take the Youth Olympic Games across three locations in the country: the capital city of Dakar, the new city of Diamniadio and the coastal resort of Saly.
